William W. Barlow

b. Abt. 1840; d. Aug 1924.  William W. Barlow was born in Orangeport, NY and while still a small boy, moved with his parents to Delavan, WI. He attended Bigfoot Prairie College in Walworth Co., WI and attended Commercial College in Chicago in 1861.

After the Civil War broke out, he enlisted with the Company D 22nd Wisconsin Infantry on 12 Aug 1862 and continued his service until the end of the war on 12 Jun 1865.  On 25 Mar 1863, he was confined in the Libby Prison in Richmond, VA for 16 days, after being taken prisoner. He fought at Murfreesboro, TN during the  Battle of Stones River, and was in Sherman’s March from Atlanta-to-the-Sea. He achieved the rank of 2nd Lieutenant.

After the war, he farmed on his father’s farm for a few years before marrying.

In Jan 1867, he married Belinda Mead; they had 2 daughters. The family moved to Cottonwood County, MN in 1872 and homesteaded in section 26 of Amo Township until 1880 when they moved to Windom, MN. In Windom, he conducted a boarding house and hostelry called the Barlow House on the east side of the square. He became the Sheriff of Cottonwood County for about ten years and was also the Justice of the Peace for a time.

The last two years of his life were spent at the Soldier’s Home where he died.
