b. 8 Dec 1891; d. 16 Oct 1979. Robert Frank Cowan was born in Paulina, Iowa to Hector and Edith Miller (Parsons) Cowan. He lived in Iowa on the family farm until moving to Great Bend Twp., Cottonwood County, MN with his family in 1910.  Richard continued to  farm until he entered the service in 1918.

On 23 Jan 1918, Robert enlisted in the U.S. Army in the 61st Infantry, 5th Division, in a light artillery company, at Camp Greene, NC.  Pfc. Cowen’s unit left for France on 12 Apr 1918. He was involved in combat in the Colmar Sector, St. Mihiel  and Meuse-Argonne.  On 4 Nov 1918, Pfc. Cohen, while fighting at the Meuse-Argonne front, was wounded in action.  He remained in France recovering from his wounds until returning to the U.S. on 1 Mar 1919.  Pfc. Cowen was honorably discharged on 13 Aug 1919 at Camp Grant, IL.

After returning from World War I,  he moved to the Sioux City, IA area abt. 1920. Abt. 1930, he moved back to the Windom, MN area where he resided and farmed in Christiania Twp., Jackson County. In the mid 1950s, he moved  near Frazee, MN  where he farmed for 25 years.  Robert moved back to Windom  in the winter of 1977-78 to spend time with his relatives.  Robert passed away at the Veterans Hospital in Hennepin Co. MN because of poor health.  He was buried at the Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis, MN.
