Martin P. Borseth

b.  14 Apr 1894; d. 19 Jul 1918.  Martin Peterson Borseth was born to Peder and Karen (Olson) Borseth in Windom, MN. He graduated from Windom High School in 1912.

On 3 Dec 1916, Martin enlisted with the U.S. Marines in Company H, 6th Regiment Marines, and was trained on the USS Rhode Island. On 23 May 1918, Corporal Borseth sailed for France.  At this time, the Germans were making their drive toward Paris, hoping to crush France before the Americans could get there. He lost his life on 19 Jul 1918 in the drive at Chateau-Thierry, when the Marines and the Doughboys went into the lines and stopped the German Army in their drive to Berlin.

Borseth was the first person from Cottonwood County to sacrifice his life in WWI.

Buried at Lakeview Cemetery, Windom, MN.
