Joseph Ness, in his own words, wrote about his experience in WWII… (Info is at CCHS Research Library)

“I left Windom, Minn. on Monday morning, Feb. 9, 1942 with a bus load of guys, for Fort Snelling.  I think that Konrad Hopperud and Harvey Iverson were with the group too. I went from there to Sheppard Field, Texas for Basic Training, then to Newark, N. J. for airplane mechanics school, then to Columbus, Miss. for about two years with the Army Air Force. Working on Training Planes. From Columbus, I was sent to the So. Pacific, starting at New Guinea and working up north with a few stops at different place, the last stop being Manila in the Philippines. I left the Philippines about the 1st of Aug 1945, by ship, for home.  We arrived in Seattle, Wash. the day Japan surrendered.  What a happy day!  They sent me to Oklahoma from Seattle where I was discharged on Oct. 8th, 1945 with the rank of Staff Sergeant.  Sure felt good to be home.”
