b. 15 May 1847; d. 14 Oct 1928.  John Carey was born in Seneca County, NY.

Carey enlisted early in the Civil War in the 148th NY Volunteer Infantry under Gen. Butler. He participated in the battles at Drewry’s Bluff  and Bermuda Hundred and served through the siege of Cold Harbor. At Petersburg, VA, he received a severe wound, but after treatment in a military hospital, he returned to his regiment  and remained with them until the war was over. He was honorably discharged at Willett’s Point, NY.

After the Civil War, Carey came to MN and with his mother and brother, homesteaded in Rosehill Twp., Cottonwood Co.

In 1882, he married Zelia Orzalia; they had 1 daughter. After marriage, they moved to Kenosha, WI, where they resided until 1893 when they moved back to Windom and established a permanent home.

Buried at Lakeview Cemetery, Windom, MN.
