Henry D. Hamm

b.  19 Feb 1895; d. 24 Apr 1954.  Henry David Hamm was born in Delton Twp., Cottonwood Co. MN to David and Katherina (Bartsch)Hamm.   By 1900, his family moved to Carson Twp., and by 1910 they moved to Midway Twp. (both in Cottonwood Co.), where Henry attended public school and graduated from high school.

On 21 Sep 1917, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was assigned to Company D, 351st Infantry, 88th Division at  Camp Dodge, IA.  On 31 Mar 1918, Henry was promoted to the rank of private first class and transferred to Medical Dept., 163rd Infantry, Depot Brigade, 88th Division.  At the time of his enlistment, Henry claimed conscientious objector status (c/o) due to his Mennonite religion and on 3 Oct 1918, he was reassigned to the Medical Department, 19th Supply Train (Field Hospital and Ambulance services), 88th Division.  On 13 Feb 1919, Pfc. Hamm was discharged at Camp Dodge.

After his discharge in 1919, he worked for a short time at the Mt. Lake View newspaper as a printer for W.J. Form.  On 22 May 1919, he married Susanna Fast in Chicago, Illinois; they had three children and at the time of the 1920 Federal Census, lived in Chicago. By 1930, they lived in Dallas, Oregon, where he owned a printing business. They lived in this area until his death in 1954.
