Ernest C. Hill

b. 16 Feb 1899; d. 3 Apr 1969. Ernest Clarence Hill was born in Westbrook Twp., Cottonwood Co., MN to John August and Anna (Einertson) Hill. He grew up on the family farm and attended country school.

On 18 Feb 1918, Ernest enlisted in the U.S. Army and was assigned to C.A.C. (Coastal Artillery Corp.,) Ft. Monroe, at Hampton, VA.  He was transferred to the 52nd Artillery, C.A.C., at Camp Eustis, VA.  While stationed at Camp Eustis, Ernest was assigned to be a chauffeur for Major General Haygood and Brigadier Generals Sutherland and Chamberlain.  Ernest was promoted to the rank of corporal on 1 Mar 1919.  On 3 Jun 1919, Corporal Hill was  discharged at Camp Eustis.

After his military service, he spent the rest of his life doing farm tiling and carpentry work around Westbrook and was a charter member of the American Legion post in Westbrook.

On 16 Oct 1934, Ernest married Sarah Bargen; they had no children. After her death in 1963, he married Gertude Johnson on 28 May 1965.

At the age of 70, Ernest passed away at his home and was buried in the Old Westbrook Lutheran Cemetery, Westbrook, MN.
