Daniel E. Helder

b. 17 Sep 1897; d. 5 Aug 1954.  Daniel Edward Helder was born in Jamestown Twp., Blue Earth Co., MN to Edezra Daniel and Mary Ellen (McGuire) Helder. His family moved to Dale Twp., Cottonwood Co., MN in the early 1900s.  Daniel attended rural school through the 8th grade in Dale Twp. and worked on the family farm while growing up.

On 23 May 1917, Daniel enlisted in the U.S. Army and was assigned to the Coast Artillery Corps (C.A.C.)at Ft. Caswell, NC.  He later was transferred to Battery F, 62nd Artillery, C.A.C. at Camp Merritt, NJ.  On 13 Sep 1918, his unit sailed for France. On 13 Feb 1919, his unit returned to the U.S. and on 11 Mar 1919, he was discharged at Camp Dodge, IA.

On 11 Nov 1919, he married Wilhemina Frances “Minnie”  (Hylarides) Helder; they had six children.  At the time of the 1930 Federal Census, the family lived in Dale Twp. and by 1940, they lived in Windom, MN where Daniel worked as a fireman.

Daniel passed away in Marion Co., OR, and was buried in the Willamette National Cemetery, Portland, OR.
