He enlisted in the Civil War in 1862 and was in Co E 24 ME Infantry.

They were some of the first settlers in the vicinity and erected a substantial set of buildings similar in construction to those built in his native Maine. He planted an orchard, shade trees, and hedges.  Besides grain farming, he raised cattle and fine horses.

He was appointed as one of the first three county commissioners by Gov. Austin. He also was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.).

His death was the result of an accident; one of his horses fell while he was riding it.
